Avena sativa, commonly known as Oat or Common Oat, is a species of cereal grain belonging to the Poaceae family. Oats are cultivated primarily for their edible seeds, which are commonly rolled or ground into oatmeal or oat flour and used as a nutritious food source. But beyond the breakfast bowl, Avena sativa has a long history of use as a herbal remedy, especially for nervous system support, eczema, vitality and libido.
Avena sativa Health Benefits
If you’re feeling stressed, tired, run down, emotionally overwhelmed, experiencing eczema, or even lacking your usual sexual desire, a daily dose of Avena sativa (also known as Wild Oats or Oat Straw) could help.
This wonderful herb is thought to be soothing to the brain and nervous system, whilst at the same time increasing sexual desire and performance in both men and women.
This gentle yet powerful herb has a wide range of applications that support mental, emotional, cardiovascular, skin and sexual health.
Avena sativa as a Natural Aphrodisiac
Avena sativa has a long-standing reputation as a natural aphrodisiac for both men and women. Its ability to increase sexual desire and vitality is partly due to its relaxing effect on the nervous system, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and physical tension that can interfere with libido.
Scientific research shows that Avena sativa contains avenanthramides, polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds improve blood flow and reduce the physical effects of stress, which may support a healthy sex drive in both sexes.
Avena sativa – “Natural Viagra” for Men
In men, Avena sativa has gained recognition as a natural alternative to pharmaceutical erectile enhancers—without the risky side effects. Sometimes referred to as “Natural Viagra,” it is known to:
- Increase healthy blood flow
- Support testosterone availability by unbinding it from sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG)
- Enhance nitric oxide production, improving vascular function
- Reduce performance anxiety
It contains saponins and alkaloids that may increase luteinising hormone (LH), which stimulates testosterone production. Herbalist Dr. Larry Clapp reports that “ten drops, under the tongue, twice a day works very powerfully to enhance erectile function.”
It’s also a key ingredient in many expensive herbal libido formulas, though pure Avena sativa extract is typically more potent and affordable.
Avena sativa for Anxiety
Avena sativa is one of the most respected herbs in Western Herbal Medicine for supporting the nervous system, especially during periods of anxiety, emotional overwhelm or burnout. Acting as a gentle nerve restorative, it calms the mind and stabilises mood, without causing drowsiness.
The richness of Avena sativa in magnesium and B vitamins makes it especially valuable for people who feel on edge, burned out or mentally scattered. Regular use of Avena sativa can promote a sense of calm, reduce feelings of stress and supports emotional regulation for more balanced emotional responses.
Its high magnesium and B vitamin content supports neurotransmitter balance and helps reduce the physiological effects of stress.
It pairs beautifully with calming herbs such as lemon balm, passionflower and skullcap for synergistic support during high-stress periods.
Avena sativa as a Health Tonic
Beyond its effects on stress and libido, Avena sativa is used as a general tonic for vitality, especially helpful during recovery from illness, fatigue or long-term stress. Used to support adrenal function and restore energy, Avena sativa is especially beneficial for individuals who feel both physically and mentally depleted.
Traditionally classified as a trophorestorative (a tissue-nourishing herb), it gently rebuilds and strengthens the body over time. It is particularly beneficial for:
- Adrenal fatigue
- Burnout recovery
- Nervous system restoration
- General convalescence
Its rich supply of iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium and complex carbohydrates makes it deeply nourishing and ideal for overall vitality and restoring energy and resilience
Oatmeal is Excellent for the Heart
Oatmeal is a great food to improve cardiovascular health. As a food, oatmeal is well-known for supporting heart health. It is a rich source of beta-glucans, a soluble fibre shown in multiple clinical trials to:
- Lower LDL (bad) cholesterol
- Reduce blood pressure
- Improve arterial flexibility
Avena sativa also contains avenanthramides, which reduce inflammation in arterial walls, supporting overall cardiovascular health. It’s one of the few foods approved by both the FDA and EFSA for cardiovascular claims.
Avena sativa seeds are not only a rich source of carbohydrate and soluble fibre, they also have the highest content of Iron, Zinc and Manganese of any grain. These trace minerals are essential for enzyme activity, antioxidant protection and oxygen transport in the body.
Oatmeal to Soothe Eczema
Colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats) is clinically proven to soothe skin irritation and reduce symptoms of eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis.
Its compounds form a protective barrier on the skin and attract moisture, helping to reduce itchiness, redness and dryness. The FDA officially recognises colloidal oatmeal as a skin protectant.
To use: Wrap ground oats in a cotton cloth and steep in warm bathwater for 15–20 minutes. Soak and gently pat skin dry.
