Sore Throats

Herbs for Sore Throats

For those who prefer a home remedy to painkillers there are many natural ways to soothe a sore throat, the most popular being a mixture of honey and lemon. Due to the antioxidants and vitamins in this reliable concoction, it relieves symptoms of the common cold and flu.

Alternatively, Slippery Elm can be combined with the bark of Wild Cherry, the leaves of a Sweetgum (Liquidambar) and Mullein (Verbascum) to make a very effective cough syrup.

The combination of Sage and Echinacea purpurea is another effective mix due to the antibacterial and antiviral properties they possess; while the menthol in Peppermint helps to thin mucus. A lesser known remedy is that of Ginger and Licorice Root. Ginger is a warming remedy which can relieve cold and flu-like symptoms, and licorice is a demulcent which helps to soothe inflammation.
